Cozy Mystery

From Book 1: After her painful and heartbreaking divorce, Bonnie Mayberry thought her life was over. The numbness, the disbelief in what had happened and the fear of what would come next ensured that her every thought was tinged with doubt. 💔 Hoping for a fresh start, she’s packed up, said her goodbyes and moved to the small town of Snow Ridge, New Hampshire.

Settling down in an old, renovated farmhouse 🏡, she plans to focus on the simple things in life. And, in time, she is determined to get back to some semblance of normalcy. But, apparently, that is not going to happen any time soon

The young girl at the local bookstore Bonnie frequents has been murdered. 📚 She was one of the few with whom Bonnie has become friendly during her short time in town. And whether it’s her mysterious past, her reserved nature or simply the relative ease in pinning the blame on the outsider, the police have Bonnie at the top of their list of suspects.

Now, if she wishes to avoid a prison sentence for a crime she didn’t commit, it appears as if Bonnie is going to have to prove her own innocence. In doing so, she’ll uncover a crooked politician, unveil a hidden monster and unearth a web of secrets & lies that certain residents of the town have spent their lives concealing. And, with a little luck, she may just survive long enough to clear her good name. ✹

What caught my attention: Emma Lee has built a devoted following in the cozy mystery community with her Snow Ridge series, which Goodreads readers have rated at nearly 4 stars across over 1,600 ratings. Published through McGovern Books, this complete five-book box set delivers exactly what cozy mystery fans crave: a relatable protagonist starting fresh, a small-town setting full of secrets, and twists that keep you guessing. Perfect for readers who enjoy the quirky small-town atmospheres of Carolyn Haines or Jenn McKinlay, this series blends Christian themes with page-turning mysteries—readers describe it as “one of the most complicated cosy mysteries” they’ve encountered, with plots that tackle everything from corrupt politicians to missing persons cases. If you love amateur sleuths who find themselves reluctantly drawn into murder investigations, and you appreciate clean reads with heart and humor, this is your next binge-worthy series.

Humorous Science Fiction, Zombie Thriller

From Book 1: When a bizarre string of unusual corpses washes up on the beaches of San Diego during Halloween week 🎃, Detective Lindsey Brant requires more than her usual set of skills to solve the mystery.

Joining forces with horror writer James Archer ✍, the two will have to survive a scourge of undead, international killers, unscrupulous reporters, and rogue spies if they’re to unravel the long-buried mystery of a deadly virus that could bring humanity to its knees. 🧟

But their greatest threat to the case may just be surviving each other. See if the two will succeed in saving the world in this irreverent new series from JT Sawyer that blends horror, sci-fi, and mystery into a snarky, saltwater thriller. 🌊

Why you’ll love this: JT Sawyer is the pen name for Tony Nester, who spent over 30 years teaching survival courses to military special operations, US Marshals, and federal agencies—and even trained celebrities like Josh Brolin and consulted on the film Into the Wild. That real-world expertise shines through in his fiction. Readers consistently praise the “snarky dialogue” and the fresh twist on zombie fiction—this isn’t your standard zombie apocalypse story, but rather a witty pre-apocalyptic crime thriller featuring the government agency ZEST (Zombie Eradication & Studies Team). Perfect for fans who want their zombie action mixed with humor, romance, and genuine mystery plotting. If you loved the snappy banter of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files or the irreverent humor of Christopher Moore’s horror comedies, Sawyer’s Brant & Archer duo will have you reading all three books in one sitting.

Here’s the deal: Glynn Stewart is a prolific bestselling author with over 80 books to his name, best known for his acclaimed Starship’s Mage series that brilliantly fuses science fiction with fantasy. With Wardtown, Stewart brings that same genre-blending mastery to create a fantasy western—think magical frontier towns protected by wardstones, demigod rulers, and cowboys with six-shooters facing down immortal beings. Readers describe it as a “refreshing departure” and a “wonderfully unique world,” with one reviewer calling it perfectly suited to fans of Ranger’s Apprentice but for adults. The short novel (perfect for a quick read) launches a complete series exploring what happens when a young ranch hand becomes bonded to a powerful mage with secrets. Reviews for Bob Mayer’s science fiction:
“Quantum Leap on steroids!” Book List. 🚀
Terry Brooks: “Spell-binding! Will keep you on the edge of your seat. Call it techno-thriller, call it science fiction, call it just terrific story-telling.”
Kirkus: “A crackling science thriller in the vein of Crichton that mixes action with science fiction.”

His Area 51 series hit #1 on multiple bestseller lists, and his military expertise brings authenticity to everything he writes. The Time Patrol series (with 9+ books) has been compared to “Quantum Leap on steroids” for good reason—each book sends agents back to pivotal moments in history where one change could destroy our present. Mayer weaves real historical events with “what if” scenarios that make you question how fragile our timeline really is. As the 2020s dawn, controversial radio DJ Keith Diamond is down on his luck, until he’s handed the opportunity to travel back in time. ⏰

Arriving in the vibrant era of post-punk and new wave music 🎾, Keith relishes being back in his younger body, but soon, there are important tasks at hand.

Resuming his old role as a tabloid journalist, Keith finds himself thrust into the news stories of the day, and quickly realises it’s not only his life he needs to turn around. Can he rectify past mistakes, avert disasters, and reshape both his future and that of others? 🎭

Join Keith and immerse yourself in the events, music, and culture of the early 1980s in this engaging and thought-provoking time travel tale. đŸŽ¶

1980 is part of the anthology series A Year in the Life. Each book revisits a different aspect of life in the 1980s, and each story can be enjoyed standalone.

Why this one stands out: Jason Ayres has created something unique with his A Year in the Life series—each standalone novel drops readers into a specific year of the 1980s with meticulous attention to the music, culture, and events that defined that era. For anyone who lived through the ‘80s or is fascinated by the decade, Ayres delivers both nostalgia and substance. Unlike heavy sci-fi time travel stories, this is lighter fare—a “what if” story focused on personal redemption and second chances, wrapped in the soundtrack and atmosphere of post-punk London. Think Stephen King’s 11/22/63 meets High Fidelity, with a British tabloid twist. Readers particularly enjoy how Ayres balances the time travel mechanics with genuine character growth and historical detail. If you love books that transport you to another era (literally, in this case) and you have any affection for the 1980s, this engaging series offers the perfect escape—plus the chance to relive one of music’s most innovative decades.

Moby Dick: or, the White Whale

Author: Melville, Herman

Classic Fiction about Huge Fish & Mammals

Moby-Dick; or, The Whale is an 1851 epic novel by American writer Herman Melville. The book is centered on the sailor Ishmael’s narrative of the maniacal quest of Ahab, captain of the whaling ship Pequod, for vengeance against Moby Dick, the giant white sperm whale that bit off his leg on the ship’s previous voyage. 🐋

A contribution to the literature of the American Renaissance, Moby-Dick was published to mixed reviews, was a commercial failure, and was out of print at the time of the author’s death in 1891. Its reputation as a Great American Novel was established only in the 20th century, after the 1919 centennial of its author’s birth. ⚓

William Faulkner said he wished he had written the book himself, and D. H. Lawrence called it “one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world” and “the greatest book of the sea ever written.” Its opening sentence, “Call me Ishmael,” is among world literature’s most famous. 📚

Melville began writing Moby-Dick in February 1850 and finished 18 months later, a year after he had anticipated. Melville drew on his experience as a common sailor from 1841 to 1844, including on whalers, and on wide reading in whaling literature. The white whale is modeled on a notoriously hard-to-catch albino whale Mocha Dick, and the book’s ending is based on the sinking of the whaleship Essex in 1820. 🌊

The detailed and realistic descriptions of sailing, whale hunting and of extracting whale oil, as well as life aboard ship among a culturally diverse crew, are mixed with exploration of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of God.

The book’s literary influences include Shakespeare, Thomas Carlyle, Sir Thomas Browne and the Bible. In addition to narrative prose, Melville uses styles and literary devices ranging from songs, poetry, and catalogs to Shakespearean stage directions, soliloquies, and asides. In August 1850, with the manuscript perhaps half finished, he met Nathaniel Hawthorne and was deeply impressed by his Mosses from an Old Manse, which he compared to Shakespeare in its cosmic ambitions. This encounter may have inspired him to revise and deepen Moby-Dick, which is dedicated to Hawthorne, “in token of my admiration for his genius.” 🎭

Why I’m including this: Sometimes the classics are free for a reason—they belong to all of us. Moby-Dick is routinely listed among the greatest American novels ever written, praised by literary giants from Faulkner to D.H. Lawrence. But here’s what many people don’t realize: it’s also a rip-roaring adventure story about obsession, revenge, and the sea. Yes, Melville includes chapters on whale biology and the technical details of 19th-century whaling, but that authenticity (drawn from his own years as a sailor) grounds the epic scope of Ahab’s mad quest. The opening line—”Call me Ishmael”—is instantly recognizable for good reason: it invites you into one of literature’s most ambitious tales about humanity’s relationship with nature, fate, and our own destructive tendencies. If you’ve never read it, or tried and bounced off in high school, this is your chance to discover why it’s endured. The book influenced everyone from Cormac McCarthy to Patrick O’Brian, and understanding Moby-Dick means understanding a huge chunk of American literary tradition. It’s dense, it’s philosophical, it’s sometimes challenging—but it’s also genuinely thrilling when Ahab finally confronts his white whale. Give it a chance; you’ll see why it’s a masterpiece.
